Service

Galicia's Coast Guard Service is the organisation in charge of maritime surveillance, search, rescue and protection operations in Galician waters. It reports directly to Consellería do Mar.

The service operates 24/7 throughout the year, providing immediate response to incidents in our Community. Over the course of its 25-year history, it has saved 1,500 lives. The Service deals also with pollution, preserving our environment, an asset of incalculable value that must be protected from threats against nature.

Another one of this organization’s major initiatives is to fight against the challenge of poaching and the illegal unfair competition that affects thousands of professionals who make a living from the fishing and seafood industry in Galicia. Preventing the sale of sea products outside of the legal trading channels and preserving the health of consumers is one of our core missions.

"In 2015 we celebrated 25 years since a service helicopter first performed a rescue operation in our community. This marked the beginning of a service that since then has been watching over the safety of people at sea. With its official creation in 1990, sailors have an extra safety element".
